In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful!

What is the Oneness of God?

There is a moment in each person’s life when they ask themselves: “What is God?”, and all the reflections and observations undoubtedly lead to an answer. “God” is the One who people resign to on the basis of love and glorification. He is the One to surrender and to be humbled by, He is the One to fear and to admire, the One to appeal to in times of trouble; it is to Him that we turn in prayer at the most important moments of life, in Him we trust in anticipation for blessing, in Him we take refuge. And all this appears in the human heart in regards to God for the reason that God possesses the attributes of perfection and greatness which are not proper of a human being, nor of any other creation.

Almighty God sent His messengers to different generations of people so that they should bring to them knowledge about the existence of the one true and genuine God, the only One who has the right to be worshipped by people. And this is the Oneness of God.

The purpose of all God’s messengers is to spread knowledge about Monotheism among people.

The last Prophet and Messenger to all mankind is Muhammad. The Angel Gabriel revealed to him Almighty’s last Holy Scripture for people – the Qur’an. The language of this Scripture is Arabic. And God named Himself Allâh; this name is derived from the word “ilaah”, which is translated as “God”. In various languages the name “God” sounds in different ways. Yet, most importantly, God is one. The one in lordship. The one in perfection. The only one worthy of worship.

Take a look and reflect on the greatness of Monotheism and its virtues.

What Makes the Oneness of God Great?

The basis of all knowledge

The Oneness of God is the foundation of all knowledge in the world, for it is the knowledge of the Creator Himself

“Had there been therein (in the heavens and the earth) âlihah (gods) besides Allâh, then verily both would have been ruined. Glorified be Allâh, the Lord of the Throne, (High is He) above all that (evil) they associate with Him!” Surah “Al-Anbiyā’”, ayah 22.

Innate nature

Faith in God and the desire to worship Him Alone is an innate aspect of human nature

“So set you (O Muhammad ‎ﷺ) your face towards the religion (of pure Islâmic Monotheism) Hanîf (worship none but Allâh Alone). Allâh’s Fitrah (i.e. Allâh’s Islâmic Monotheism) with which He has created mankind. No change let there be in Khalq-illâh (i.e. the religion of Allâh – Islâmic Monotheism): that is the straight religion…”
Surah “Ar-Rūm’”, ayah 30.

The purpose of all the prophets

The mission of all the prophets was to call for the worship of God Alone, the Creator of all that exists

“And We did not send any Messenger before you (O, Muhammad ‎ﷺ) but We revealed to him (saying): “Lâ ilâha illa Ana [none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allâh)], so worship Me (Alone and none else)”. Surah “Al-Anbiyā’”, ayah 25.

The Virtues of the Oneness of God

The path to Paradise

The Oneness of God is the reason for well-being in the next life

“And give glad tidings to those who believe and do righteous good deeds, that for them will be Gardens under which rivers flow (Paradise)” Surah “Al-Baqarah”, ayah 25.

Love

The Oneness of God is the reason for God’s love of His servants and their love of Him

“And spend in the Cause of Allâh and do not throw yourselves into destruction and do good. Truly, Allâh loves Al-Muhsinūn (the good-doers)” Surah “Al-Baqarah”, ayah 195.

Protection

The Oneness of God is the reason for Allâh’s favor and protection

“Truly, Allâh defends those who believe. Verily, Allâh likes not any treacherous ingrate to Allâh [those who disobey Allâh but obey Shaitân (Satan)]” Surah “Al-Hajj”, ayah 38.

Calmness

The Oneness of God is the reason for comforting the hearts and illuminating the soul

“It is those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh and worship none but Him Alone) and confuse not their belief with Zulm (wrong i.e. by worshipping others besides Allâh), for them (only) there is security…” Surah “Al-An‘âm”, ayah 82.

Security and Freedom

The Oneness of God is the reason for security and freedom in the world

“Allâh has promised those among you who believe and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the land, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practice their religion which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islâm). And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me. But whoever disbelieves after this, they are the Fâsiqûn (rebellious, disobedient to Allâh)”. Surah “An-Noor’”, ayah 55.

Good deeds

The Oneness of God is the greatest of good deeds

Imam At-Tirmidhi narrates in a long hadith that a man will be resurrected on the Day of Judgement, and ninety-nine scrolls will be laid out for him, each scroll is as far as the eye can see. And when the man is about to feel hopeless, He will say: “You have a good deed with us, so you shall not be wronged today.” Then He will bring out a card; on it will be: “I testify to La Ilaha Illa Allâh (there is no true God worthy of worship except Allâh), and I testify that Muhammad is His Servant and Messenger”. And this testament will outweigh all the sins recorded in the scrolls.

Forgiveness

The Oneness of God is the reason for forgiving sins

Anas, r.a., narrated that the Messenger of Allâh ‎ﷺ said: “Allâh, Blessed is He and Most High, said: “O Son of Adam! Verily as long as you called upon Me and hoped in Me, I forgave you, despite whatever may have occurred from you, and I did not mind. […] So Son of Adam! If you came to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth, and then you met Me not associating anything with Me, I would come to you with forgiveness nearly as great as it”. at-Tirmidhi 3540

Blessings

The Oneness of God is the reason for blessings in the worldly life

“And if the people of the towns had believed and had the Taqwâ (piety), certainly, We should have opened for them blessings from the heaven and the earth, but they belied (the Messengers). So We took them (with punishment) for what they used to earn (polytheism and crimes)”.
Surah “Al-A‘rāf”, ayah 96.

Hope

The Oneness of God is the door to the hope for Allâh’s mercy and forgiveness

“So whoever hopes for the Meeting with his Lord, let him work righteousness and associate none as a partner in the worship of his Lord”. Surah “Al-Kahf”, ayah 110.

The fear of God

The Oneness of God is the reason for getting rid of sins (the fear of God)

“Those who avoid great sins and Al-Fawâhish (illegal sexual intercourse) except the small faults, — verily, your Lord is of Vast Forgiveness. He knows you well when He created you from the earth (Adam), and when you were fetuses in your mothers’ wombs. So ascribe not purity to yourselves. He knows best him who fears Allâh and keeps his duty to Him”. Surah “An-Najm”, ayah 32.

The good

The Oneness of God is the good deeds that will outweigh the bad deeds on the Scale on the Day of Judgement

Allâh’s Messenger ‎ﷺ said: «One day Nuh (Noah), peace be upon him, told his son: “O son, if the seven heavens and the seven earths were a dark ring, they would be cut by ‘There is no god but Allâh’”». Ahmad 2/169, al-Hakim 1/148.

Intercession

The Oneness of God is the reason for being eligible for intercession on the Day of Judgement

One day Abu Hurairah, may Allâh be pleased with him, asked the Messenger of Allâh ﷺ: “O Allâh’s Messenger! Who will be the luckiest person who will gain your intercession on the Day of Resurrection?” Allâh’s Messenger said: “… the one who said sincerely from the bottom of his heart: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allâh”. аl-Bukhari, The Book of Knowledge, 84 (99).

Support

The Oneness of God is the reason for deriving support from Allâh

“Allâh will keep firm those who believe, with the word that stands firm in this world (i.e. they will keep on worshipping Allâh Alone and none else), and in the Hereafter. And Allâh will cause to go astray those who are Zâlimûn (polytheists and wrong-doers), and Allâh does what He wills”. Surah “Ibrāhīm”, ayah 27.

Protection

The Oneness of God is the reason for gaining Allâh’s protection

“Allâh is the Walî (Protector or Guardian) of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into light”. Surah “Al-Baqarah”, ayah 257.

Wealth

The Oneness of God is the reason for a person’s wealth

“So those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh – Islâmic Monotheism) and do righteous good deeds, for them is forgiveness and Rizqun Karîm (generous provision, i.e. Paradise)”. Surah “Al-Hajj”, ayah 50.

A good life

The Oneness of God is the reason for having a wonderful life

“Whoever works righteousness – whether male or female – while he (or she) is a true believer (of Islâmic Monotheism) verily, to him We will give a good life (in this world with respect, contentment and lawful provision), and We shall pay them certainly a reward in proportion to the best of what they used to be (i.e. Paradise in the Hereafter)”. Surah “аn-Nahl”, ayah 97.

Salvation

The Oneness of God is the reason for finding salvation from all evil

“Then (in the end) We save Our Messengers and those who believe! Thus it is incumbent upon Us to save the believers”. Surah “Yūnus”, ayah 103.

“Verily! He has no power over those who believe and put their trust only in their Lord (Allâh)”. Surah “An-Nahl”, ayah 99

Love of creations

The Oneness of God is the reason for expressing love among creations

“Verily, those who believe [in the Oneness of Allâh and in His Messenger ‎ﷺ] and work deeds of righteousness, the Most Gracious (Allâh) will bestow love for them (in the hearts of the believers)”. Surah “Maryam”, ayah 96

Angels praying for forgiveness

The Oneness of God is the reason for angels making supplications of forgiveness for the believers

“Those (angels) who bear the Throne (of Allâh) and those around it glorify the praises of their Lord, and believe in Him, and ask forgiveness for those who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh)”. Surah “Ghāfir”, ayah 7.

Allâh’s best creation

The monotheist is the best creation of Allâh

“Verily, those who believe [in the Oneness of Allâh, and in His Messenger Muhammad ‎ﷺ  including all obligations ordered by Islâm] and do righteous good deeds, they are the best of creatures”. Surah “Al-Bayyinah”, ayah 7.

Deliverance from sadness and distress
